Obama annoyed about Honduras

August 10, 2009

In his words just now in Mexico, Obama said something like this (and this is a very rough paraphrase): “The people who criticized me for not intervening in Honduras are the same people who criticize the U.S. for being too heavy-handed in Latin America.”

True enough, although there’s some nuance missing there. Wanting the U.S. to help reinstate a democratically elected government doesn’t really conflict with wanting the U.S. to stop helping overthrow democratically elected governments (or prop up dictatorships for political convenience). In fact, those two things seem to be pretty complementary, eh?

Also, I think a lot of these critics just wanted the administration to come out and call this thing a “coup” flat-out, right away, which is a reasonable enough thing to want.
